Ilkka Aulis Hanski (born February 14, 1953 in Lempäälä ; † May 10, 2016 ) was a Finnish ecologist and evolutionary biologist . He is particularly known for his pioneering work in the field of metapopulations .

Life

Hanski obtained a Masters in Zoology from Helsinki University in 1976 , and a Ph.D. in 1979. also in zoology from Oxford University . In 1979 he went to Helsinki University as a research assistant, in 1988 he was given a full professorship in animal ecology , and since 1996 he has held a research professorship at the Academy of Finland .

Hanski was married and had three children. He died of cancer on May 10, 2016.

Act

Hanski is best known for his work on plantain moth populations in southern Finland, on which he - building on the work of Richard Levins - was able to present basic principles of population biology and further develop the concept of metapopulations . He dealt with mechanisms that influence local extinction and global survival of species - in particular habitat fragmentation - and the mathematical description of these mechanisms.

Further work by Hanski dealt with the adaptive radiation of dung beetles in Madagascar or the population cycles of lemmings and voles . More recent work dealt with the genetic basis of metapopulations.

Hanski wrote more than 250 papers, five of which were among the ten most cited papers on the biology of metapopulations in 2010 ; Hanski himself was the fourth most cited ecologist.
