Harley Hatcher (* 1939 in Thomasville , Georgia ) is an American songwriter and record producer . He wrote numerous songs for various biker films , especially in the 1960s and 1970s . He is known for his close collaboration with Mike Curb and his label Curb Records .

Life

Harley Hatcher grew up in Georgia and has been interested in music since childhood. When he was twelve, he bought a guitar and taught himself to play the piano, just as he did later. His first band was the rock 'n' roll band The Moonlightes. After high school , he joined the United States Army . There he came into contact with Richard Polodor , the producer of Sandy Nelson , in 1960, when he was stationed with the 102nd Signal Battalion in Kaiserslautern . He engaged Harley and his band at the time for some appearances on his All-Army Entertainment Show. Polodor later invited him to record some songs in Los Angeles and recommended him to others . In 1964 he began working as a songwriter and producer for Mike Curb and Sidewalk Productions . Among other things, he wrote the surf hit Apache '65 for Davie Allan and The Arrows , where he played acoustic guitar himself . His best-known early works also include the songs on the soundtracks to Die wilden Engel (1966) and Die Cadillac Gang von San Francisco (1968). Some songs also appeared in the animated series Hot Wheels and Cattanooga Cats by Hanna-Barbara . In 1969 Harley founded Pendulum Productions and Leo The Lion Music Publishing. He released soundtrack albums through both labels. He wrote songs for the films The Sadists of Satan (1969), The Crutch (1970), They called him Pretty Boy Floyd (1970), Hard Rider (1971) and A Bastard Strikes (1973).

In 1970 he co-wrote the song All for the Love of Sunshine for Hank Williams Jr. The film was part of the soundtrack for Shock Troop Gold (1970) with Clint Eastwood and Donald Sutherland . The song received a BMI award . In 1972 MGM Records acquired the rights to Leo The Lion Music Publishing and Harley began working for the label. He later became the head of the country department and wrote for Solomon Burke , Eddy Arnold , Kenny Rogers and Ray Stevens , among others .

In 1974 he founded Artists of America Records with his brother , on which artists such as Rufus Thomas , Johnny Desmond , Robert Goulet and Richard Roundtree published their music. He also wrote and produced Paul Delicato's hits Ice Cream Sodas & Lollipops & A Red Hot Spinning Top and Cara Mia , both of which hit the top 10 on the Billboard charts .

In 1987 he returned to Mike Curb and thus Curb Records, where he worked with LeAnn Rimes , The Judds and the Bellamy Brothers . From 1987 to 1998 and from 2006 to today he worked as a senior consultant. From 1999 to 2006 he was Senior Vice President of Curb Records. In his career he recorded more than 100 songs.

Hatcher is a lecturer at Belmont University in Nashville , Tennessee . There he teaches "Music Business Strategies".

Private life

Harley Hatcher currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife. The marriage had two children.
