Harold Hammer-Schenk

Harold Hammer-Schenk (born May 31, 1944 in Königs Wusterhausen ) is a German art historian , university professor and editor . He taught as a professor of art history at the Free University of Berlin .

Life

Hammer-Schenk studied art history, archeology, German language and literature as well as pre- and early history in Vienna , Tübingen and Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1974 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on synagogue construction in Germany from 1800 to 1871. He worked as a research assistant at the TH Hanover and completed his habilitation in 1981 with a thesis on synagogue construction in Germany between 1780 and 1933. He taught as a professor in Hanover and at the Kassel University and from 1989 at the Free University of Berlin. In 2009 he retired.

Hammer-Schenk has been married to the Yiddish singer Anna Werliková (real name Solveig Hammer-Schenk) since 2006 ; together they have one child and live as a family in Berlin.
