Hartwig von Passow (born September 8, 1599 in Zehna , † September 14, 1644 in Rostock ) was a German politician and diplomat.

Life

Passow was the son of the Mecklenburg court junker Adam von Passow and his wife, the court maid Anna von Plessen. After taking lessons from private tutors, Passow attended the Latin school in Güstrow . Passow was already enrolled at the University of Rostock in November 1611 , but was only admitted to study five years later.

He began his studies there in 1616, but moved to the University of Strasbourg in 1619 and then to the Collegium in Tübingen . Passow finished his studies there and set out on his Grand Tour in 1622 . This took him through Switzerland , France and the Netherlands . In 1624 he returned home.

In the following year, Passow was appointed court squire by Duke Adolf Friedrich I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and promoted to the chancellery some time later. Passow supported the policy of the Dukes of Schwerin in numerous diplomatic missions.

Wallenstein expelled the dukes in autumn 1628, after they had been ousted by the emperor some time before. Passow faithfully followed them on their way into exile. From July 1629 they lived in Hansfelde near Lübeck .

During his exile, Passow was accepted into the Fruit Bringing Society together with Duke Adolf Friedrich I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin . Prince Ludwig I of Anhalt-Köthen gave Passow the company name of Krause and the motto to enjoy green . Krauser full of lettuce ( Lactuca sativa var. Crisa L. ) was given to him as an emblem . Passow's entry can be found in the Koethen company register under no. 157. A rhyme law has not yet been proven.

At the age of 36, Passow married Oelgard von Pentz , the widow of Joachim von Barnewitz , on January 1, 1635 , and took over the management of her extensive fortune. From 1636 to 1638 he was the guardian regimental councilor for the later Duke Gustav Adolf of Mecklenburg-Güstrow . In 1640 he achieved the transfer of the ducal debts to his wife and their son as a mortgage to the offices of Lübz and Crivitz and was the administrator of this pledged property. In the last years of his life, Passow worked as a secret councilor at the court in Schwerin.

Hartwig von Passow died on September 14, 1644 in Rostock at the age of 45. He was buried in Schwerin Cathedral .
