Childe Hassam
Frederick Childe Hassam (born October 17, 1859 in Dorchester , Massachusetts , † August 27, 1935 in East Hampton on Long Island , New York ) was an American impressionist painter .
Life
Childe Hassam was an avid draftsman and watercolor painter from his youth. After just one year, he dropped out of high school without a degree in 1877 and took a job in the accounting department of a publishing house. As a young man he worked with woodcuts and established himself as a freelance illustrator for magazines such as Century Magazine , Harper's and Scribner's . In addition, he was taught drawing and painting by the American painter and sculptor William Rimmer . In 1878 he attended night school at the Boston Arts Club and the Lowell Institute. The first landscape pictures were created in a naturalistic style, which mainly showed Boston and the surrounding area ( Gloucester ). Hassam's first solo show took place in 1882 and included about 50 watercolors, most of which showed Nantucket beach scenes .
Hassam first traveled to Europe in the summer of 1883, visiting Italy, France, the Netherlands, Spain and Great Britain. The watercolors by William Turner made a great impression on Hassam. In 1884 Childe Hassam exhibited 67 watercolors from his European tour in Boston.
In 1884 he married Kathleen Maud Doane (1862-1946). The marriage remained childless. In New York in 1886 he saw the exhibition of French Impressionists and in the same year he traveled to Paris, where he stayed for the next three years. In Paris, Hassam studied at the Académie Julian , where he was taught by Gustave Boulanger and Jules-Joseph Levebre , among others . Several books appeared in Boston during this time, to which he contributed illustrations; Auctions of his works financed his stay in Paris. In 1887 he exhibited for the first time at the Paris Salon and in 1889 took part in the World's Fair, where he was awarded a bronze medal. In the same year he returned to America and moved to New York.
In 1897 Hassam resigned from the Society of American Artists and founded the Ten American Painters , known as The Ten , with John Henry Twachtman and Julian Alden Weir . Hassam became the leading exponent of American Impressionism. His city views of Washington Square and Fifth Avenue , as well as the landscape views of Gloucester , the Shoals Islands and other subjects, were successful with the public. Since 1898 he was a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters . In 1906 Hassam was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design . Further trips to Europe and within the USA followed. In 1916 Hassam began a series of pictures with flag motifs, with which he promoted the entry of the USA into the First World War .
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York bought one of his paintings in 1909 while he was still alive .
In 1919 Hassam moved to East Hampton on Long Island / New York, where he died in 1935 and was buried in Cedar Lawn Cemetery.
