The Hastings River is a river in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales .
Surname
The river was first mapped by European explorers in 1818 after John Oxley discovered it and named it after the then Governor General and Viceroy of India , Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings .
The vineyards on its banks are named after the Hastings River, as is an endangered mammal, the Hastings River Mouse ( Pseudomys oralis ).
geography
The river has its source seven kilometers southwest of Kemp's Pinnacle in Werrikimbe National Park on the eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range . The river then flows to Fernleigh , where it turns its course east and is accompanied on its south bank by the Oxley Highway . Immediately north of Port Macquarie , it reaches the Tasman Sea .

On the upper reaches of the Hastings River you can fish for cod and catfish , in the estuary species such as sea bream , flat head and Ludericks (fam. Kyphoside ).
