Hatchet (English for "small ax", "hatchet") is an American splatter film directed by Adam Green in 2006 . The film describes itself as Old School American Horror and as such is a typical slasher film .

action

Sampson hunts alligators in the swamp with his son Ainsley. During the boy's pee break, Sampson is killed by the mass murderer Victor Crowley, who subsequently also murders Ainsley. Victor Crowley was born misshapen and was kept hidden in a hut in the swamp by his father. To lure Victor out of the house, teenagers threw fireworks at it. The house caught fire and Victor couldn't escape. His father tried to free him by smacking the door with an ax. Little did he know that his son was behind it and so unfortunately hit him in the face. After ten years of sorrow and loneliness, the father died.

The introverted Ben was abandoned by his girlfriend. That's why he and his friends go on a New Orleans trip to distract themselves. But the pain of separation is still too great for Ben to celebrate with his friends. He would like to take part in a "Haunted Swamp Tour" recommended by friends. His buddy Marcus accompanies him. You'll find Shawn, the only one in town to organize scary rides. You travel to the swamp in a bus with a few other participants. There they get on the ferry and start their journey through the wetland.

But the journey doesn't last long when their boat crashes into a rock and capsizes. The participants make it to the bank in time, whereby an older participant is attacked by an alligator. The silent Marybeth draws her pistol and shoots the predator. She then confesses that she is looking for her father Sampson and her brother Ainsley, and tells the story of Victor Crowley. The group comes near Victor Crowley's house. The old couple, who don't believe the story, want to pass the house to escape when Crowley rushes out of nowhere with a cleaver in hand and kills them. Marybeth shoots him and the rest of the group flees.

Bit by bit, the group of survivors is decimated until only Ben, Marcus and Marybeth survive. Together they try to douse the mass murderer with gasoline and set it on fire in order to kill him, since he is apparently unstoppable by bullets. Just as they managed to set it on fire, it started to rain immediately. The trio then flees to the nearby cemetery. But Victor Crowley cannot be defeated and now grabs Marcus.

Finally, Ben manages to escape with Marybeth through an iron rod that he rams into the mass murderer. The two of them find Sampsons' boat and start paddling. But Victor Crowley follows them. Suddenly Marybeth is pulled into the water. When she appears again, Ben is dying in the boat. When Victor Crowley appears, the film breaks off.

Reviews

Björn Helbig from Filmstarts.de said about the film: “With 'Hatchet' Adam Green has made a small, nostalgic excursion into the Gore swamps of bygone years. Unfortunately, the director also carries the genre's weaknesses with him. Lots of gags, (severed) limbs and intestines make “Hatchet” a whimsical pleasure for real fans. ”The sometimes funny moments of the film are repeatedly alternated with the sometimes eerily bloody gore images.

The lexicon of international films writes about Hatchet : "Stupid slasher film that copies corresponding series from the 1980s and brings them up to date with disgusting cinema stories through an increased torture potential."

Sequels

In 2011 a sequel to the film was released with Hatchet II , again directed by Adam Green . Hatchet III was released in June 2013. Green is no longer involved as a director, but as a screenwriter and executive producer. In 2017, a fourth part called Victor Crowley was surprisingly premiered on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Hatchet . Adam Green is again directing and scripting.
