Hawick (hɔɪk; Scottish Haaick ; Scottish Gaelic Hamhaig ) is a town in the Scottish Borders , Scotland with about 14,294 inhabitants. It lies at the mouth of the Slitrig Waters in the Teviot .

economy

Hawick is known as a location for the wool processing industry. As early as the end of the 18th century, wool, especially merino or cashmere wool , was primarily processed into clothing and accessories in Hawick, first on looms and finally with the help of knitting machines . Well-known companies such as Pringle of Scotland , Lyle & Scott , Johnstons of Elgin , Barrie , Dawson International , Hawick Cashmere , Hawick Knitwear , Peter Scott , Lovat Mill or Scott & Charters had or have their headquarters and / or production facilities in Hawick.

From 1849 to 1969 Hawick owned a station on the Waverley Line , which was discontinued as part of the Beeching Ax . Since the line was closed, Hawick has become one of the British cities furthest from a railway connection.

The Borders Distillery opened in March 2018, making it the first distillery in the Scottish Borders since 1837 . She has been making her whiskey since 1837 .
