Hedbergia abyssinica (Syn .: Bartsia abyssinica Hochst. Ex Benth. ) Is a plant from the genus Hedbergia within the family of broomrape plants (Orobanchaceae). It is a semi -parasite. The genus name honors the Swedish botanist Karl Olov Hedberg (1923-2007).

Vegetative characteristics

Hedbergia abyssinica is a perennial herbaceous plant , occasionally also woody plant. The upright to climbing stem axis is branched in the lower part and finely hairy ( trichomes ).

The opposite leaves are sitting. The leaf margin is notched or serrated. The size of the leaves decreases towards the top.

Generative characteristics

The flowers stand individually in the axils on short flower stalks and are not accompanied by bracts .

The hermaphrodite flowers are weakly zygomorphic with a double flower envelope . The calyx ends in four straight calyx tips. The crown is almost radially symmetrical with five corolla lobes, the coronet is slightly bilobed, but not clearly divided into upper and lower lip. The four stamens are in two pairs, each with a different shape. The anthers consist of two counters that are the same size, stand parallel and end in a spiked tip. The simple, thread-like stylus ends in a full-margined scar .

The egg-shaped capsule fruits contain a large number of seeds. The white seeds are winged lengthways.

Occurrence

Hedbergia abyssinica is native to tropical Africa. It occurs from Ethiopia through Sudan , Kenya , Tanzania , Uganda , Malawi , Zambia , Cameroon to Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo .
