The Catholic Holy Spirit Church in the Kasern fraction of the Prettau community in South Tyrol is a pilgrimage church . It is 1619 meters above sea level. d. M. and has been the northernmost church in Italy since 1919 . The church is a listed building .

history

At the head of the Ahrntal valley north of Kasern in the open countryside, surrounded by alpine pastures and numerous three-thousand-meter peaks , a chapel was built in the Middle Ages . The legend reports that people believed they heard a bell and when they looked it up they found an image of the Holy Spirit . Although the location appears remote, the building is located on a Tauern crossing. In 1455 a church was built, which was consecrated on June 22nd by Bishop Nikolaus von Kues , who preached on the subject of "Gaudium erit angelis Dei super uno peccatore paenitentiam agente" (Serm. 191). But just a few decades later it had become too small for the numerous miners who worked in the flourishing Prettau mining and had to be enlarged.

Building description

To the west of the church is the pointed tower, in which a bell, cast around 1600, hangs. The nave has a ribbed vault resting on console heads . In the polygonal choir, however, a star vault can be seen. In the south is the walled-up pointed arch portal . A brick staircase leads to the gallery .

The original winged altar of the church and other carvings have meanwhile been brought to the Prettau parish church, as the original location in a secluded location with a large number of hikers at the same time did not seem safe enough. All that remains is a crucifixion group with an extremely bloodied Christ from the 17th century on the right wall of the nave. In the choir there is a small picture of the mercy seat in a rich rococo frame instead of the winged altar . The figures of St. Oswald , Ursula and Kilian are copies of the blown figures of the original winged altar. In addition, there is a crucifix on the left in the choir room , about which the legend tells that it originally stood in the open further back in the valley head. A boy who was on his way to a prize shooting in the Salzburg region used the crucifix for shooting practice. In fact, he won the shooting competition and received a bull for it. When he drove him home, the bull killed him just at the place of the crucifix. The target practice is the reason why it is riddled with holes.

In the choir, frescoes from the 15th century were uncovered. They show St. Ursula, a picture of the Holy Spirit and a coronation of Mary . A fresco of the resurrection of Christ from the 16th century can be seen in the nave . The depictions of the Last Supper and the baptism of Christ date from the 18th century .
