history

On January 7, 777, the King's Estate Hammelburg, to which the area of today's Heiligkreuz belonged, was donated to the Fulda Monastery . After the presence of Celtic and Germanic tribes, monks of the Schlüchtern monastery are said to have settled in the Heiligkreuzer area. From 1059 Heiligkreuz belongs to the wilderness area of the Fulda monastery . During this time Heiligkreuz was settled by the Lords of Grumbach , Steckelberg and Hutten . After the von Thüngen family married into the Steckelberg family, they took possession of Heiligkreuz and other places in 1525. Over time, ownership changed between the Fulda Monastery, the Juliusspital and the Thüngen family.

The Heiligkreuzer Kirche was built in the 16th century and is said to have been built by monks from the Schlüchtern monastery during their settlement of Heiligkreuz. In 1553 the place owned by the Thüngen family at that time became Protestant; at that time Heiligkreuz was known as an important place of pilgrimage. In 1565 the "Gräfendorfer Church Regulations" came into force.

Among the plague epidemics that struck Heiligkreuz, that of 1575 is said to have had the most serious consequences for the place.

After the Thirty Years' War Heiligkreuz belonged to the parish of Geroda and from 1745 to Weißenbach ; Heiligkreuz has been an independent subsidiary of Weissenbach since 1929.

From 1814 Heiligkreuz belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria .

As part of the municipal reform , Heiligkreuz became a district of Wartmannsroth on July 1, 1972.
