The Heinrich-Lassen-Park in Berlin-Schöneberg

The Heinrich-Lassen Park is located in the Berlin district of Schöneberg between the Belziger, Dominicus-, Eisenacher- and main street . The green area with playground and sunbathing lawn is named after Heinrich Lassen (1874–1953), a German architect , construction official and local politician .

Location and history

The blurred boundary of the park is formed by Belziger Strasse in the north, the back of the buildings on Eisenacher Strasse in the east, the back of the buildings on Hauptstrasse in the south and the wall of the cemetery on Dominicusstrasse. The area can roughly be given as 160 m × 200 m.

The park was created in 1953 on the site of an Ice Age wetland on which the Schöneberg families Richnow and Willmann laid their gardens in the 19th century. The two families had become rich and well-known as " millions of farmers " through the sale of large properties to the city in the early days .

Reconstruction of the park

At the end of 2010, the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district office began extensive renovation work in the park. The bike paths through the park should be made smaller, as they are often muddy , according to the responsible district councilor Oliver Schworck ( SPD ) . In addition, a new central entrance area, rainwater infiltration and built-in garbage collection containers were planned. However, the residents of the park were not included in the renovation plans. Also to the district assembly , only "some maintenance measures " were announced in the environmental committee . Shrubs and trees were cleared to enlarge the entrance . Furthermore, the play and sunbathing area should be made smaller to make space for containers.

The building measures met with resistance from the residents concerned: They founded the citizens' initiative “Lassenpark Lassen!”. They wanted the park to be kept in its original state. After a temporary construction freeze in November 2010, a “ round table ” worked out a compromise solution that took into account both the interests of the district office and the demands of the initiative. The compromise provided for two entrances and exits instead of a central entrance. The route should be maintained, whereby the use of asphalt should be avoided in favor of a paving made of concrete slabs. A hedge should be planted to protect against noise and privacy from Belziger Strasse. The entire construction work required a sum of around 400,000 euros, of which around 100,000 euros had already been spent by the time the construction stopped.

After the district council had obtained a change in the building project, the district office continued work. In accordance with the requirements of the district assembly, this also included the dismantling of the eastern arch, the restoration of the lawn and the downsizing of the entrance area. In February 2013, the district office informed the district council that the renovation work in the park was "essentially complete".

In the park there is a sculpture made of shell limestone depicting the Greek shepherd god Pan . The work of the unknown artist dates from 1970.

Accessibility

The park and the paths are partially barrier-free . The terrain has little unevenness in the ground. There is mainly a gradient at the entrances to the park.
