Heinrich Denicke

Heinrich Denicke (born January 2, 1856 in Buxtehude , † October 30, 1943 in Harburg an der Elbe ) was a German lawyer and local politician . From 1899 to 1903 he was mayor and from 1903 to 1924 lord mayor of the then still independent city of Harburg.

Life

The son of the Buxtehude businessman and senator Heinrich David Denicke (1827–1912) attended the high school in Buxtehude and the high school in Hanover , where he graduated from high school in 1874. He then studied law in Heidelberg , Leipzig and Göttingen . After one year of military service in Stade , he completed his legal clerkship at the local courts in Buxtehude, Stade and Freiburg / Elbe , with a lawyer in Hanover and at the Higher Regional Court of Celle . In 1882 he passed the Great State Examination and took up a position as assistant judge in Bad Iburg on January 1, 1883 . In the same year he was appointed syndic of the city of Harburg, he was first mayor in 1899 and then from 1903 to 1924 mayor of Harburg.

Denicke was particularly committed to the economic development of Harburg. In his tenure were among others the construction of Harburg Tidehafens (1904-07), the incorporation of Pomerania break (1906) and Eißendorf (1910) and the conclusion of the Third Köhlbrandvertrages with Hamburg (1908), the expanding and navigation on the Süderelbe regulated. In 1901 a power station went into operation and the first tram passed through Harburg. Denicke also campaigned for the expansion of the sewerage system, the traffic routes and the school system.

After his retirement, Denicke moved into the Hanoverian provincial parliament in 1926 for the German People's Party , where, as before, he appeared as a staunch opponent of any plans for Greater Hamburg .

Denicke was buried in the old cemetery in Harburg .

Honors

  • In 1924 Heinrich Denicke was made an honorary citizen of the city of Harburg.
  • In 1930 a street in Heimfeld was named after him.
