Heinrich Rubner (born November 2, 1925 in Grafrath , Upper Bavaria , † October 15, 2017 in Munich ) was a German historian and forest scientist . He emerged primarily with standard works on forest history in the age of the industrial revolution and during the time of National Socialism .

Live and act

Heinrich Rubner was born on November 2, 1925, the son of the forest scientist and later Ministerial Director Konrad Rubner (1886–1974). In 1955 he was with the representation of the forests of the Inn-Salzach-plate at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1962 he qualified as a professor at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg with the text Investigations on the Forest Constitution of Medieval France and was then a lecturer in forest history from 1963 to 1969. During this time, one of his main works was created, Forest History in the Age of the Industrial Revolution (1967).

Then Rubner moved to the Institute for History at the University of Regensburg , where he held a professorship for economic and social history from 1969 until his retirement . Research into European forest and hunting history remained one of his priorities. These studies culminated in his most important book in 1985: German Forest History 1933–1945. Forestry, hunting and the environment in the Nazi state . The comprehensive presentation of the development of German forestry during the time of the " Third Reich " closed a large gap in the previous processing of this time from a forestry point of view. From 1979 to 1992 Rubner was Deputy Leader of the working group "Forest and Forest History" of the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations ( IUFRO ).

Even after his retirement, Rubner led several research projects and published the results of his research in various specialist journals . He was responsible for the research project “Forest History of Saxony in the Middle Ages and Modern Times”. Rubner's personal interest was in the Bohemian Forest as the eastern Bavarian-Bohemian border mountains and their social history . To this end, he led the research project “ Jews in the Bohemian-Bavarian Border Region”, which was completed in 1995 . With the collection of biographies published in 1994, Hundred Significant Forestry People in Bavaria (1875-1970) , Rubner closed another gap in forest research. Rubner last lived in Munich.

His written documents are in the archive of the Technical University of Dresden .
