Johann Heinrich Thöl (born June 6, 1807 in Lübeck , † May 16, 1884 in Göttingen ) was a German legal scholar and member of the Frankfurt National Assembly . He exerted considerable influence on the development of current commercial law .

Life

Heinrich Thöl's ancestors had been bone carvers for generations, his father had become a merchant and co-owner of the Thöl & Minlos shipping company. After visiting the Katharineum , he began studying law in Leipzig in the summer semester of 1826 , but moved to Heidelberg in 1827 , where he was shaped by Mittermaier and Thibaut . On July 29, 1829, he received his doctorate with a digest interpretation and habilitated on December 1, 1830 on a topic of bill of exchange law .

He initially worked as a private lecturer and associate professor in Göttingen. In 1842 he was appointed full professor for German law at the University of Rostock . There he briefly held the post of rector in 1848.

Thöl was elected to the Frankfurt National Assembly from November 27, 1848 to May 20, 1849 , as a successor to the retired Friedrich Genzken in the 1st constituency ( Neustrelitz ) of Mecklenburg-Strelitz . How they came up with Thöl, of all places, in Neustrelitz, who had no connection whatsoever to the little Grand Duchy, must remain unexplained. He counted himself to the Left Center of the Augsburger Hof parliamentary group and worked from May 1, 1849 on in the legislative committee. He did not emerge as a speaker.

After the failure of the Paulskirche, Thöl returned to Göttingen, where in 1849 he was given the full professorship for German law at the Georg-August University and held high university positions, where he remained until the end of his life. As a lawyer, he achieved a great reputation in the field of commercial law. After his death, a bust of honor was set up for him in the hall of the Göttingen university library.

Due to his connections during his school days in Lübeck, he is assigned to the Jung-Lübeck group. In 1850 he refused an appeal to the Higher Appeal Court of the four Free Cities as the successor to Johann Friedrich Hach .

In 1879 he was granted honorary citizenship of Lübeck .
