Heinrich Eger von Kalkar (also Heinrich Egher , Heinrich von Calcar ; * 1328 in Kalkar , † December 20, 1408 in Cologne ) was a German Carthusian mystic and choral theorist .

Life

After attending the Latin school in Kalkar, Heinrich Eger, born there in 1328, studied in Cologne and Paris . In 1356 Eger became Magister Artium in Paris , 1358/59 Magister regens . From 1363 he lived as a canon at the Collegiate Church of St. Georg in Cologne and at the Collegiate Church of St. Suitbert in Kaiserswerth and entered the Carthusian Order in Cologne in 1365, whereupon he was prior in Monnikhuizen near Arnhem from 1367 to 1372 , then rector in Roermond , from 1378 to 1384 prior to St. Barbara in Cologne and then prior to 1396 in Marienberge near Strasbourg . From 1375 to 1395 Eger was also active as a visitor to the order province of Alemannia Inferior . In 1396 he withdrew and lived as a simple monk in the Cologne Charterhouse until his death in 1408 .

As a late scholastic , choral theorist and mystic, Heinrich Eger wrote music-theoretical, legal, historical and, above all, ascetic-mystical writings, the latter of which in particular had a major influence on the religious renewal movement devotio moderna around Geert Groote , who was persuaded by Heinrich Eger to stop in 1374 .
