Heinrich Karl Eckard Helmuth von Maltzan , also: Heinrich Eckhard Carl Helmuth von Maltzan (born  September 6, 1826 in Dresden , †  February 22, 1874 in Pisa ), Baron of Wartenberg and Penzlin, was a German writer and orientalist .

Life

Heinrich Freiherr von Maltzan (No. 670 of the gender census ) came from the Tarnow branch of the old, originally Mecklenburg, noble family of the Maltzahn . His father, Heinrich Karl Franz Adolf Freiherr von Maltzan (1793-1851), was a Bavarian chamberlain and major of the cavalry. After the early death of his mother, Julie Poulott-Thomson of Waverley († 1834), Heinrich grew up partly in England and partly in different places in Germany. From 1846 to 1850 he studied law and oriental languages in Munich , Heidelberg and Erlangen and initially entered the administrative service of the Kingdom of Saxony for a short time . Financially independent from his father's rich inheritance from 1851, he led the life of a private scholar and explorer in various oriental countries.

In 1860 he went on a pilgrimage to Mecca, disguised as a Muslim . A passport, which Maltzan had obtained by bribing an Algerian Arab, served as camouflage. This procedure was necessary because visiting the holiest city of Islam was and is forbidden for non-Muslims with the death penalty. It was only after the death of the official passport holder that Maltzan published his report on this trip in 1865.

His descriptions of Phoenician and Punic inscriptions were also of importance for oriental research , especially in the report on a trip to the former reigns of Tunis and Tripoli . Incidentally, he was one of the first to bring knowledge of the Mehri to Europe.

He died of suicide after a serious illness .
