Heinz Hoffmeister (born June 24, 1851 in Saarlouis , † March 4, 1894 in Berlin-Grunewald ) was a German sculptor , draftsman, painter and writer.

Live and act

Heinz Hoffmeister, who grew up in Saarlouis in Prussia, began training as a sculptor in the studio of the brothers Carl and Robert Cauer in Bad Kreuznach . He then switched to August Wittig's sculpting class at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , but a few months later he had to begin his military service in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871. Hoffmeister came back from this war as an officer and decorated with the Iron Cross and now continued his studies at the Berlin Art Academy with Albert Wolff .

From 1873 Hoffmann decided to stay permanently in Berlin, where he now set up his main residence and workshop. Nevertheless, he was drawn to near and far abroad for study purposes and he made several trips through Spain , North Africa and the Orient . Hoffmeister spent a lot of time mainly on Capri , where he stayed as a regular guest in the artist's villa Albergo Pagano and was also involved in the design of the murals there.

After Hoffmeister first made himself known in his early years through smaller portraits and sculptures, he later created a number of partly monumental figures and groups, which stylistically are influenced by classicism and their treatment of forms often strongly influenced by naturalism . In the years that followed, under his direction, numerous important monuments, tombs, busts, architectural sculptures and medals were created for many cities in what was then Prussia. In between, however, he also appeared again and again as a painter, draftsman and writer of travel reports and fairy tales.
