Heinz Lang
Heinz Lang (* 1885 in Vienna ; † August 27, 1904 in Kidderminster , England ) was the son of the women's rights activist Marie Lang and the lawyer Edmund Lang as well as the brother of the painter and stage designer Erwin Lang (husband of Grete Wiesenthal ) and the painter Lilith Lang . His tragic love for Lina Loos , the wife of Adolf Loos , prompted Arthur Schnitzler to write his drama Das Wort (which was unpublished during his lifetime) .
Life
At the end of the 19th century, the house of Marie and Edmund Lang ( 6th , Magdalenenstrasse 12) was a hub of the Viennese artist and intellectual scene. Visitors included Peter Altenberg , Friedrich Eckstein , Marianne Hainisch , Hugo von Hofmannsthal , Adolf Loos, Rosa Mayreder and Hugo Wolf .
The children Heinz, Erwin and Lilith were involved in the discussions at an early age and benefit from their critical and cosmopolitan environment. They also ran a young people's discussion group, in which u. a. Friedrich Adler , Egon Wellesz and Rudolf Huber took part.
Cleverness and the ability to criticize made Heinz Lang - although still a student of the Academic Gymnasium - to a partially revered and welcome member of the circle around Peter Altenberg, who raved about the expensive, wonderful Heinz Lang , who puts his soul in chains .
Adolf Loos and his young wife, who was married in July 1902, also frequented the circle of Viennese coffee house literary experts. A passionate love affair arose between Lina Loos and Heinz Lang in 1903. After Loos discovered Lang's love letters from his wife and confronted them with them, she ended her relationship with Lang.
Heinz Lang turned to Peter Altenberg in his need. He answered him - according to Hugo von Hofmannsthal's notes - as follows:
“What should you do? Shoot yourself . What will they do? Live on . Because they are as cowardly as I am, as cowardly as the whole generation, hollowed out inside, a liar like me. ”Heinz Lang shot himself with a revolver on August 27, 1904 in England, where he had been waiting in vain for Lina Loos.
The maid Ida Oberndorfer gave birth to a child with Heinz Lang in September, Karl Friedrich called Peter (1904–1947), who was raised by Marie Lang.
