Helga Ballhaus

Helga Ballhaus (born September 14, 1935 ; † September 28, 2006 in Los Angeles ; born Helga Maria Betten ) was a German actress who also appeared as a production designer ; occasionally also as a costume designer and production manager .

Live and act

Helga Ballhaus began her career in 1952 as an actress at the Franconian Theater in Wetzhausen . She was a permanent member of the theater community there for several years and got to know the son of the theater founder, the cameraman Michael Ballhaus , here.

In 1958 she married Michael Ballhaus and repeatedly worked with him (with whom she commuted between America and Germany from the 1980s) and their sons Sebastian and Florian .

From 1958 Helga Ballhaus played at the Staatstheater Karlsruhe , from 1968 at the Freie Volksbühne Berlin under Rainer Werner Fassbinder and from 1974 to 1977 she was a member of the TAT - Theater am Turm in Frankfurt, also under Fassbinder. Ballhaus was repeatedly engaged as a guest at the Franconian Theater Schloss Maßbach up until the 1970s . As a film actress, she starred in Fassbinder's Angst essen Seele auf (1974).

In 1979 she received together with Norbert Scherer , the German Film Award in Gold for the Design of The Marriage of Maria Braun . In 1999 she was the line producer for the feature film The 13th Floor - Are you what you think? , which was nominated for the Saturn Award in 2000.

In 2003, Helga Ballhaus was one of the founding members of the German Film Academy .

She is buried in the municipal forest cemetery Dahlem on Hüttenweg in Berlin.
