Helga Erika Hörz (* 27. July 1935 as Helga Erika Ivertowski in Gdansk ) is a German Marxist philosopher and feminist . Until the liquidation in 1990 she was a professor for ethics at the East Berlin Humboldt University .

Life

Hörz comes from a working-class family, her father was a crane driver at a shipyard in Gdansk . He was arrested in 1939 for anti-fascist activities. When convicted in 1940 by the People's Court in Berlin, four members of the group received the death penalty, and their father was sentenced to life in prison. Her mother, sister and she were placed under police supervision and subjected to many harassments. Her father was liberated from the Mauthausen concentration camp in May 1945 . These events and terrible war experiences made her a pacifist .

After the Second World War and her displacement , she grew up in Nauen near Berlin in the GDR and, after graduating from high school, studied philosophy , ethics and psychology at the Humboldt University of Berlin (HUB). She then worked as a trade unionist and in youth work, taught at the Berlin-Karlshorst School of Economics and began analyzing the social position of women. 1965 doctorate it with the work "Some philosophical and ethical problems in determining the social role of women and the enforcement of their equality", 1974, she was habilitated with the theme of "personality, morality and moral education" and then to full professor of ethics at appointed the HUB. Hörz initiated earlier than a university professor of ethics in 1971 the area of ethics in the section Marxist-Leninist philosophy of the HUB. Hörz took over the office of Section Director from Anneliese Griese and headed the Philosophy Section from March 1, 1987 to January 8, 1990; Heinz Kuchling was her successor .

Hörz was a member of the advisory board for philosophy and head of the permanent working group "Ethics" at the Ministry of Higher Education and Technical Education of the GDR (1988–1990), member of the working group of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences "Problems of the biological, psychological and social determination of personality" , Member of the interdisciplinary working group “Anthroposociogenesis” at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW) and member of the Scientific Council “Women in Socialist Society” at the AdW.

Hörz was also a deputy council member in the International Democratic Women's Federation (IDFF) and took part in congresses (Helsinki, Berlin, Prague, Moscow), council meetings (Budapest, Bucharest, Berlin), seminars (London, Berlin) and a national women’s conference in Bangladesh. She was involved in the organization of consultative meetings and expert advice within the framework of the cooperation between the IDFF and the UN .

After being recalled on October 1, 1990 for health reasons by the GDR Minister Hans Joachim Meyer with transition to early retirement and emeritus in the course of the development of the GDR philosophy , she worked as a volunteer leader of a series of events on ethics in the "Socio-cultural Contact Center für Seniors ”in Berlin (1992 – December 1994) and was a member of the advisory board of the educational academy of the Landesverband der Volkssolidarität Berlin from 1997 as well as chairwoman of the advisory board from the end of 1997 until January 2011, responsible for scientific lectures, literary readings and computer courses. In 2009 she published her memoir.

She has been married to the philosopher Herbert Hörz since 1954 and is the mother of three children, the couple has seven grandchildren.

In 1975 she was elected by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as a member of the United Nations Commission on the Legal Status of Women (CSW) as the state representative of the GDR . The UN Women's Rights Commission "has 45 members (states) who are elected by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for a period of 4 years and always represent all 5 regions." It was re-elected several times and was involved in the drafting of the UN Convention involved in eliminating all forms of discrimination against women . In 1979 she introduced a declaration adopted in 1982 “For the greater inclusion of women in the peace struggle”.

Hörz took part in the UN World Conference on Women (Copenhagen, Nairobi) and UN seminars (Groningen, Geneva, Vienna, Paris). She spoke about gender problems in 1975 in London, at the UN seminar in 1977 in Groningen, at the ECE seminar "Time management" in 1979 in Geneva and in Paris. At the UN, she was Vice-President of meetings of the UN Commission “On the Status of Women” in Vienna in 1978, and in New York in 1979 and 1980. In March 1980 she was president of the meeting in Vienna, and at the 2nd UN World Conference on Women in Copenhagen she was 1st vice-president “In charge of coordination” in July 1980. She became president of the meeting in Vienna in 1990 with the character of a world conference elected, this office ended with German reunification on October 3, 1990.
