Hellmut Ley

Robert Ferdinand Hellmut Ley , also Hellmuth Ley , (born December 23, 1909 in Bernburg (Saale) , † December 31, 1973 near St. Moritz ) was a German chemist . He was chairman of the board of Metallgesellschaft AG (1961–1973), president of the Society of German Chemists (GDCh) (1966–1967) and chairman of the board of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (1970–1973).

Life

Hellmut Ley, son from the marriage of Chief Medical Officer Nikolaus Josef Ley and Petronella, b. van der Sandt, after graduating from high school in Kleve (1928) studied chemistry at the University of Innsbruck and the Technical University of Darmstadt . In 1937 he was charged with a thesis on the Hydridverschiebungssatz and crystal structure to Dr.-Ing. PhD at THD. After scientific assistance in Darmstadt, he moved to Frankfurter Metallgesellschaft in 1936 and worked as a chemical laboratory assistant. In 1944 he became head of the department for process development, in 1949 he became general manager of the chemical laboratories of the metal company.

In 1956 Hellmut Ley became a member of the board of Metallgesellschaft AG in Frankfurt am Main and was responsible for research, chemical production and chemical plant construction. In 1961 he became CEO of Metallgesellschaft AG (MG) . Ley restructured the group, in particular the mining sector. He initiated the construction of a new IS furnace for lead / zinc ore smelting at Berzelius in Duisburg, the zinc electrolysis at the Ruhrzink Datteln smelter site and the Rheinzink rolling mill of the United German Metalworks . After his sudden and unexpected death, Karl Gustaf Ratjen became his successor.

Act

Ley was involved in numerous business associations as well as academic societies. From 1966 to 1967 he was President of the Society of German Chemists (GDCh) . His predecessor was the Nobel Prize winner Richard Kuhn , his successor was Hellmut Bredereck . From 1970 to 1973 he was chairman of the Society for Chemical Apparatus ( DECHEMA ). He was u. a. President of the Max Buchner Research Foundation. In 1960 he became a board member of the Association of Friends of the Technical University of Darmstadt eV

Hellmut Ley was chairman of the board of the Stifterverband from 1970 to 1973; his successor was Hans-Helmut Kuhnke (Ruhr coal). The Hellmut Ley Endowment Fund was established in 1974 by Hellmut Ley's Circle of Friends.

Hellmut Ley became a member of the Catholic student union AV Austria Innsbruck in 1928 and of the KDStV Nassovia Darmstadt in 1961 .

In 1954, he was from Cardinal Grand Master Nicola Cardinal Canali Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem and appointed at the Cologne Order Basilica on December 8, 1954 St. Andrew by Lorenz Jaeger invested, Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy.
