career

Youth and Regionalliga Süd, until 1974

From the age of ten, the student Helmut Klump went through the youth classes with the white-green of the Fürth game association. He experienced the transition to senior football in the amateur team of the "Kleeblatt-Elf", before he was used for the first time in the contract league team in the Regionalliga Süd in the course of the 1968/69 round. The defensive player made his debut on December 22, 1968 in a 2-1 home win against Freiburg FC in front of goalkeeper Dirk Krüssenberg at the side of defender colleague Paul Derbfuß in the Regionalliga. In his first year as a regular player, 1969/70, there was also a " Frankenderby " against the Bundesliga relegated 1. FC Nürnberg . Under coach Kuno Klötzer, the “Club” prevailed in both games against Fürth, but missed out on the Bundesliga promotion round as third in the table. The derbies in the 1970/71 series were extremely exciting when Nuremberg won the championship, but both games against Fürth were contested until the final whistle. In front of 26,000 spectators in the preliminary round in September 1970 at the Ronhof, the game ended goalless 0-0. On March 6, 1971, the "Club" decided the home game against Fürth with a goal in the 90th minute of the game to a 1-0 home win. The “cloverleaf” defense around goalkeeper Peter Löwer and the defensive block with Wolfgang Schöpp , Hermann Marchl , Ewald Stolle , Walter Rauh and Helmut Klump convinced in both games against the FCN attackers Günther Michl , Manfred Drexler and Roland Stegmayer . His last appearance in the old second-rate Regionalliga Süd resulted from the away encounter on May 4, 1974 when Fürth won 3-2 goals at FC Bayern Hof and took tenth place under coach Heinz Elzner and thus new for the 1974/75 round introduced 2nd Bundesliga was qualified.

Second Bundesliga, 1974 to 1980

In the first rounds of the second division, Klump and colleagues fought to stay in the league. In the second year, the Fürth team started with 4:24 points and were in 20th place. In the second half of the season they reached 27:11 points. The "club" as runner-up came in at 26:12 points in the same period. Paul-Werner Hofmann scored 23 goals in attack. For the first time in the last round of coach Hans Cieslarczyk , 1976/77, eighth place achieved a single-digit placement in the 2nd Bundesliga. The defensive bulwark with Libero Bernhard Bergmann , Vorstopper Wolfgang Lausen , the full-backs Hermann Grabmeier and Helmut Klump and the outstanding goalkeeper Löwer were well coordinated. When under the new coach Hannes Baldauf in 1977/78 the training was tightened considerably, practically the professionalism with two training sessions per day was introduced, Fürth took sixth place and Klump had completed all 38 league games. In the 1978/79 season he and his teammates achieved the best placement in the 2nd division with fourth place behind Meister 1860 Munich, SpVgg Bayreuth and Wormatia Worms. A weak start with 8:14 points and the three minus points on matchdays 34 and 35 against FC Hanau 93 and FSV Frankfurt prevented a possible promotion to the Bundesliga . In his last round, 1979/80, when he reached seventh place in the table, he made 31 league appearances (1 goal) and was also in the "clover-leaf eleven", which on April 12, 1980 with champions and Bundesliga promoted 1. FC Nürnberg A 0-0 draw.

In addition to the local derbies against the "Club", the successful participation in the Intertoto round against Djurgarden IF Stockholm, Sosnowiec and Wiener SC in the summer of 1969 was a highlight in Helmut Klump's long-standing playing career.

The trained mechanical engineer, married and father of two children, always combined work and football and was later employed by the Fürth public utility company.

Trainer

After the end of his contract player career, he took over the ASC Boxdorf for round 1980/81 and held the position of player-coach there. As a coach he worked for the amateurs of the game association from January to June in 1983, before he earned the "AH" from 1983 to 2008.
