Helmut Michelis

Helmut Michelis (* 1954 ) is a German journalist specializing in security and defense policy .

Life

Michelis was born in 1954. He initially worked for the Westdeutsche Zeitung and the Palatinate Merkur . He then became head of the Mönchengladbach local editorial office of the Rheinische Post (RP) and chief editor of the Central Lower Rhine department (six editorial offices). Until the end of December 2015 he was the security editor of the paper in Düsseldorf and has been working as a freelancer ever since. He writes articles, reports and commentaries and reported among other things. a. from the Falkland Islands , the US , Cyprus , the Middle East , Afghanistan , the Horn of Africa and Rwanda .

Since January 2017 he has been responsible for the bimonthly magazine “Der Deutsche Fallschirmjäger” as editor-in-chief for the Bund Deutscher Fallschirmjäger . He is also volunteering as a board member of the aid organization “Lachen Helfen” and as a training mentor for the Catholic workers' movement in the Middle Lower Rhine region.

As a reserve officer , Michelis was scheduled to work in the Bundeswehr Personnel Information Center in Cologne until he reached the age limit for reservists (65 years) in July 2019. He was previously u. a. Used by the Special Operations Division (DSO) in Regensburg and in the press and information center of the Army Command (HFüKdo) in Koblenz / Army Command (KdoHeer) in Strausberg. He also accompanied the Airborne Brigade 26 several times on the Franco-German training program "Colibri". In 1984 he was the founder of the International Mönchengladbach Military Competition (IMM), which he initiated as chairman of the Krefeld / Mönchengladbach district group of the reservists' association . He was also chairman of the Niederrhein district group of the reservists' association for fourteen years. Michelis took part in the SFOR foreign mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina for half a year . In January 1997 he founded the field newspaper Der Keiler in Sarajevo . In March 1997 he was involved in Operation Libelle in Albania . In 2004 he was promoted to colonel in the reserve .
