Helmut Ulrich (painter)

Helmut Ulrich (born July 5, 1956 in Augsburg ) is a German painter and sculptor. Ulrich came to the fore primarily through reorganization and design, especially of sacred spaces. Numerous works in color, glass and light as well as metal and stone come from him.

Life

Helmut Ulrich grew up in Augsburg. After attending the humanistic grammar school with St. Stephan in Augsburg, he first studied philosophy and psychology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich for two years . During the semester breaks he also worked at the Sheiling School ( Camphill - Education) in Ringwood , England .

In 1978 he broke off his studies and began an apprenticeship as a church painter with Josef Lang in Lechbruck am See . With this he carried out numerous restorations and redesigns, especially of wall and ceiling paintings in Germany, Italy and Austria.

Thereupon he decided to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich at the chair for painting and large composition (Christian art - color and spatial design, especially in cult spaces) with Franz Bernhard Weißhaar . He was also committed to the Föhrenbühl home special school in Heiligenberg-Steigen .

In 1984 he received a grant from the Danner Foundation and spent a year studying painting with Jörg Immendorff . This was followed by a stay at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna (1985) and a study trip to Rome (1986). In the same year Ulrich received the advancement award of the Archdiocese of Munich (Kardinal-Wetter-Advancement Award). At the same time he worked as a guest in Hermann Jünger's class for jewelry and equipment . In 1988 he was awarded the master's degree. He completed his studies in 1990 with a diploma.

In 1991 he married the puppeteer ( Augsburger Puppenkiste ) Maria Michl. The two have four children. Ulrich has since worked as a freelance painter and sculptor with his own studio in Munich and Friedberg .

From 2001 to 2004 he was involved in research work with the Schott glass works ( Mainz ) and the Clausthal University of Technology (Institute for Non-Metallic Materials) to develop a process for layering optical glasses.

In 2002 he began studying art education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Gerd Dengler. After studying in Naples and Venice , he worked as an art teacher at the Holbein-Gymnasium in Augsburg until 2004 . He then received an invitation as a visiting professor at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design , Halifax , Canada .

Since 2004 he has been working exclusively as a freelance artist again.
