Josef Lang (* 1947 in Bad Tölz ) is a German sculptor .

Life

After school education and a commercial apprenticeship from 1964 to 1967 with subsequent activity, Lang decided in 1977 to live out what he had felt like an artist since childhood and began an apprenticeship as a stonemason in order to learn the basics of the craft. After completing his apprenticeship, Lang studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1979 to 1986 . There he was a master student of Erich Koch . Since then, Lang has worked as a freelance sculptor, is a member of the BBK Allgäu / Schwaben-Süd and is active in the association for contemporary art in Landsberg. He is married to the artist Cornelia Rapp and lives in Munich and Denklingen .

Lang uses stone, bronze and wood as material for his monumental sculptures , whereby his more recent sculptures are mostly made of wood, which he prefers to make from an oak trunk without a model. He values wood as a material, as he can work with it relatively spontaneously and, especially with large sculptures, quickly achieves results. Lang's figures are often given a monochrome coating, e.g. B. by glaze or by dry brushing color pigments into the wood, usually in the basic colors or a dark green tone. “They are figures with multiple viewing axes that allow the viewer to discover something new from every side.” “The size of the wooden sculptures, the archaic surface with the traces of the chainsaw, the abstraction of the body language and the striking coloring create a monumental effect. "

The "original and unused are characteristic features" of Lang's work. "Fed by an archaic canon of forms that come from cultures and artistic landscapes that are far apart in terms of time and space, Josef Lang's figures engage in a constant dialogue with the artist and the audience." He describes the "human figure as a vehicle of expression" as his "life theme" Humanity"; his formal language as "reduced, gestural realism". It is important for Lang that his works are perceived by the viewer as a whole and not in fragments. “The art of Josef Lang is about the representation of the 'generally valid in the concrete', about 'abstraction' in the true sense of the word, but by no means about 'non-representational'.” “The introverted-looking sculptures by Josef Lang are metaphors of humanity an emphasis on traits that tend to be marginalized in everyday life: vulnerability and vulnerability, the ability to take a stranger in your arms, to lift them on your shoulders, to carry them and to endure them. "

When setting up his works in public spaces, it is important to Lang that the installation site becomes a space that is defined by the sculpture.

“I love it when my sculptures gather in front of an exhibition in the studio. It then becomes incredibly alive. Everyone seems to be telling each other something and they don't notice me. "
