Helmut Zielinski

Helmut Reinhold Zielinski (born April 25, 1944 in Paderborn ; † December 24, 2017 ) was a German clergyman , Roman Catholic theologian and professor of moral theology and ethics . His last position was at the seminary in the Chosica diocese in Peru , where he was also the ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta . In Germany he made a major contribution to the development of palliative medicine and the hospice movement .

Live and act

Helmut Zielinski studied Catholic theology in 1966 at the Dominican Order College in Walberberg as well as in Cologne and Bonn and specialized in moral theology and ethics. After ordination in Cambridge , he was a doctoral student at the University of Cambridge from 1970 to 1975 , where he received his doctorate in 1974 with a dissertation on euthanasia in the light of the events of 1939 to 1945 in Germany .

From 1975 to 1983 he was head of the hospital pastoral care and lecturer for medical ethics at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . From 1983 to 1989 he conducted research at the University of Cologne and initiated the hospice movement as well as pain and palliative therapy in Germany with the surgeon Heinz Pichlmaier and Mildred Scheel . The first palliative care ward in Germany was set up in Cologne in 1983 according to plans by him, Heinz Pichlmaier and Ingeborg Jonen-Thielemann and is considered a pioneering model for subsequent facilities.

In 1980 Zielinski founded the Working Group for Medical Ethics and Society Education (AMEG) in Cologne and from 1980 to 1989 was the editor of the Touchstones of Medical Ethics , a series of documentations on medical ethics.

Zielinski supported Elisabeth Kübler-Ross's model of the phases of dying , but emphasized the importance of the religious needs of the dying and of discussions about the meaning of life and life after death.

In 1989 he went to Peru as a pastor and official ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta . He founded Malteser Brasil and Malteser Peru . He worked there as a priest in the slums of Lima, the Pueblos jóvenes (Ate Vitarte, Lima East), and was envoy to the embassy of the order in Lima and economist for the diocese of Chosica . He also taught as a professor of moral theology and ethics at the seminary in Lurigancho-Chosica . He kept in touch with Germany.

Helmut Zielinski died after a long illness in December 2017 at the age of 73.
