In 1977, the son-in-law Günter Röttgering joined the company as a later successor to Walter Hengst, during which the name was changed to Ing.Walter Hengst GmbH & Co. KG. After the introduction of the first cup oil filter with an automatic drainage system and plastic screw cap in 1988, the Berlin location, Hengst Filterwerke Berlin GmbH & Co. KG, was founded in 1990. Hengst introduced the ENERGETIC filter system as the first metal-free filter insert in 1993, followed by the introduction of the first cup oil filter with integrated centrifuge in 1995 and the first fluid management module in 1996. In 1997 an oil mist separation system ( cyclones for gasoline and diesel engines) was introduced.

In 1998 a large fire destroyed a third of the Hengst filter works. In 1999, Hengst founded a joint venture in Joinville, Brazil under the name Hengst-Wetzel Ltda.
