Henri Lavagne

Henri Jules André Lavagne (born July 24, 1939 in Boulogne-sur-Seine ) is a French ancient historian and classical archaeologist .

From 1962, Henri Lavagne studied Lettres at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris , one of the Grandes écoles of France. After the Agrégation in 1967 he was from 1968 to 1969 assistant for ancient history at the University of Nice . In 1969 he graduated as élève diplomé from the 4th section for historical and philological sciences and religious studies of the École pratique des hautes études . He was then a member of the École française de Rome until 1972 , before he was employed from 1972 to 1977, first as a research assistant, then as a researcher at the Recueil général des mosaïques de la Gaule department of the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNSR). In 1977 he won the CNRS bronze medal for his research.

In 1977, Henri Lavagne moved to the 4th section of the École pratique des hautes études as the Chargé de conférences for the history of the mosaic. After receiving his doctorate on Operosa antra , supervised by Pierre Grimal . Essai sur un thème de l'imaginaire romain at the Université Paris-Sorbonne in 1986 he taught there as professor of the history of Roman Gaul until he retired in 2005.

Henri Lavagne was co-director of the specialist journal Monuments et Mémoires de la Fondation E. Piot and from 1980 to 1984 together with Paul-Marie Duval , then until 1994 sole editor of the Chronique gallo-romaine of the journal Revue des études anciennes . Between 2003 and 2017 he was the editor in charge of the new edition of the Recueil général des bas-reliefs, statues et bustes de la Gaule romaine ("Comprehensive collection of Gallo-Roman reliefs, statues and busts"), founded by Émile Espérandieu , which is published under the Title Nouvel Espérandieu has been published in five volumes by the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres .

Henri Lavagne is a specialist in Roman history and civilization in general, and in the history and archeology of Roman Gaul in particular. In addition, the art history of antiquity, in particular the ancient mosaic, as well as the sculpture of Gallo-Roman culture , the Middle Ages and the modern age belong to his research focus. Furthermore, the Latin epigraphy of Gaul and the history of the Roman religion , especially Mithraism , are among his specialties.

Henri Lavagne has been a member of the Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques since 1990 . He is in command of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques and Chevallier des Ordre national du Mérite . In 2006 he became a full member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres. He is also a member of the Société nationale des antiquaires de France , of which he was President in 1997, and President of the Association internationale pour l'Étude de la mosaïque antique .
