Henri Médus (born October 21, 1904 in Guelma , French North Africa , † November 11, 1985 in Toulon ) was a French opera singer with a bass voice .

Life

Henri Médus grew up as a child of French Algeria and received a vocal training at the "École des Beaux-Arts" in Algiers . In 1929 he made his debut at the Opéra d'Alger under the artistic director Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht in the role of Colline in Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème . In 1931 he moved to Paris for further training and initially sang as a chorister at the Théâtre du Châtelet . In 1933 he made his debut at the Paris Opera in the role of Ramphis in the opera Aida . He remained committed to the house until 1958 and sang almost all of the major bass roles in opera literature. He was at the world premieres a. a. by Reynaldo Hahn's Le marchand de Venise (1935), Oedipe by George Enescu (1936), La Samaritaine by Max d'Ollone (1937) and Bolivar by Darius Milhaud (1950). With the Ensemble of the Opera Comique he was a guest at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in London , where the opera Ariane et Barbe-Bleue by Paul Dukas was performed for the first time .

Médus later gave more concerts and performed in the French provinces, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal and Spain. In 1974 he said goodbye in Lille in the role of Sarastro . He taught singing at the Paris Conservatory and was a juror in singing competitions .
