Henriette Catharina von Oranien-Nassau (* January 31st July / 10th February 1637 greg. In The Hague ; † November 4, 1708 in Oranienbaum Castle ) was a Dutch princess from the House of Orange and by marriage, Princess of Anhalt-Dessau .

Life

Henriette Catharina was the third of the four daughters of Prince Friedrich Heinrich of Orange and his wife Amalie zu Solms-Braunfels , who reached adulthood. In 1642, as a child, she was betrothed to Count Enno Ludwig von Ostfriesland , who was also a minor . Later, however, Henriette Catharina successfully refused to marry the Count of East Friesland and the engagement was broken.

Through the mediation of her brother-in-law, Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg , the marriage with Prince Johann Georg II of Anhalt-Dessau in the Dutch city of Groningen came about on July 9, 1659 . This wedding was the basis for a long-lasting, good family relationship between the Principality of Anhalt-Dessau and the Electorate of Brandenburg and the Kingdom of Prussia .

As a princess, Henriette Catharina took part in the establishment and development of the relatively poor principality. In 1660 the village of Nischwitz received it as a personal property, which was renamed Oranienbaum in 1673 in memory of its origins . From 1683 she had the city, park and Oranienbaum Castle built here as her personal residence, the town has a baroque, grid-like basic structure, the castle by the Utrecht architect Cornelis Ryckwaert has a Dutch character. After the death of her husband Johann Georg II. In 1693, she had Oranienbaum Castle expanded into a widow's residence, which she lived in until her death. Oranienbaum Castle is one of four castles in Germany named after the House of Oranien . They were built for four sisters, daughters of the Dutch governor Friedrich Heinrich Prince of Orange-Nassau and his wife Amalie zu Solms-Braunfels , who were married to German rulers.
