Amos Henry Chilver, Baron Chilver FRS , FEng (born October 30, 1926 in Barking , Essex , † July 8, 2012 in Cornwall ) was a British engineer and politician ( Conservative Party ).

life and career

Chilver was born to Amos Henry Chilver and his wife AE Mack. After attending the Southend High School for Boys , he studied at the University of Bristol , where he graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. In 1951 he earned a PhD in the field of civil engineering (Civil Engineering) and in 1962 a Doctor of Science. From 1952 to 1954 he was a lecturer (Lecturer) at the University of Bristol. From 1958 to 1961 he taught at the Corpus Christi College of the University of Cambridge .

From 1961 to 1969 he was Chadwick Professor of Civil Engineering at University College London . From 1970 to 1989 he was Vice-Chancellor of Cranfield University . He was also a member of the Cranfield University Board of Directors (Member of Court).

In the early 1980s he was chairman (chairman) of the Northern Ireland Higher Education Review Group, which with the preparation of a report (so-called. Chilver Report ) on the standardization of in Northern Ireland common Initial Teacher Education was commissioned (ITE). 1983 Chilver succeeded Jock Campbell, Baron Campbell of Eskan as chairman of the Milton Keynes Development Corporation (MKDC).

From 1982 to 1995 he was President of the Institute of Management Services; from 1993 to 1995 President of the Institute of Logistics. Chilver was from 1988 to 1991 Chairman (Chair) of the Universities Funding Council. He was critical of aspects of cooperation between universities. From 1992 to 1995 he was chairman of the English China Clays mining company . On February 25, 1993 he was appointed chairman of the mining company RJB Mining . He stayed in office until 1997. Chilver was also a director of Imperial Chemical Industries .

From 1995 to 1998 he was chairman of Chiroscience plc, and from 1996 to 1998 of Plymouth Development Corporation. Chilver was director of the pharmaceutical company Zeneca plc from 1993 to 1995 .

Chilver wrote two books: 1958 Problems in Engineering Structures with RS Ashby and 1959 Strength of Materials with John Case, who died before the book was completed.

Membership in the House of Lords

Chilver was named Life Peer as Baron Chilver, of Cranfield in the County of Bedfordshire on July 14, 1987 . On July 15, 1987, he was officially inducted into the House of Lords with the assistance of Rhys Lloyd, Baron Lloyd of Kilgerran and Max Beloff, Baron Beloff . He gave his inaugural address on July 15, 1992 on the subject of industrial policy.

On the website of the House of Lords, he indicated education , economy and the environment as topics of political interest .

He talked about industrial policy , small business , universities and higher education . He spoke only irregularly in the House of Lords. In November 1992 he spoke to small businesses. In 1993 he spoke up in an article about universities. It wasn't until seven years later, on June 14, 2000, that he spoke on the subject of higher education. That was his last request to speak there. He last took part in a vote on March 21, 2005.

In the evaluated period (2000–2012), his presence was low and was in the single-digit range. He was last present in 2010.

Awards

In 1977 Chilver became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and 1982 of the Royal Society . He became a Knight Bachelor in 1978 . He received an honorary doctorate of Doctor of Science from the University of Leeds (1982), the University of Bristol (1983), the University of Salford , the University of Strathclyde (1986), the University of Buckingham (1990), the University of Bath (1986), the Cranfield Institute of Technology (1989) and the Compiègne University of Technology (1990).

Chilver has been an Honorary Fellow of Corpus Christi College Cambridge and an honorary member (Companion) of the Institute of Management since 1981 .

Family and private

In 1959, Chilver married Claudia Grigson, sister of ship technician Christopher Grigson . The marriage had five children. He died at his Cornwall home on July 8, 2012, at the age of 85 .
