Henry "The Skipper" Franklin (born October 1, 1940 in Los Angeles ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , electric bass ).

Live and act

Franklin, a son of the West Coast -Trompeters Sammy Franklin, played in high school in the Latin band of Roy Ayers , then in New York at Willie Bobo and Archie Shepp . From the mid-1960s onwards, he was mainly active in the Los Angeles music scene; first recordings were made in 1968 with Hugh Masekela ( ... Is Alive and Well at the Whiskey a Go-Go ). In the following years he was a member of the trio The Three Sounds around the pianist Gene Harris ; he also worked a. a. with Doug Carn and Gene Russell and John Carter . In 1971 he recorded his debut album The Skipper for the Black Jazz label in Chicago . a. Oscar Brashear , Charles Owens , Bill Henderson , Kenny Climax, and Michael Carvin performed .

Franklin made a guest appearance with Hampton Hawes at the 1971 Montreux Jazz Festival ; he then performed with Hawes and Gerry Mulligan at the Pescara Jazz Festival. He toured with Hampton Hawes in England ( Anglo-American Jazz - Phase One , with Peter King ) and Denmark ( A Little Copenhagen Night Music , with Dexter Gordon ). After his return to California he played in the John Carter / Bobby Bradford Quartet ( Secrets , 1972), Woody Shaw ( Song of Songs ), Phil Woods , Michael Howell , Julian Priester ( Love Love , ECM , 1973), Bobbi Humphrey , Donald Byrd , Sonny Rollins , Calvin Keys , Hammond Smith , Roland Haynes , Freddie Hubbard ( Liquid Love , 1976), Freddie Redd , Ray Crawford, and Benny Powell . He also recorded a number of soul jazz albums under his own name , in which musicians such as Rob Blakeslee , Jerry Rusch , Al Hall Jr., Charles Owens and Dwight Dickerson were involved.

In the 1980s and 90s Franklin worked in the Creative Arts Ensemble (including with George Bohanon , Jeff Clayton ), in the Dennis González / John Purcell 8Tet and in the Dennis Gonzalez New Dallas Quartet, as well as with Fred Raulston , John Wood and Fred Griffin. With Carl Burnett and Bobby Pierce ( 3 More Sounds ) he recorded a homage to The Three Sounds in 2003 ( A Musical Tribute to Gene Harris ). In 2012 he played a tribute album to McCoy Tyner ( High Voltage ) with Chuck Manning , Bill Heid and Carl Burnett . In the field of jazz he was involved in over 94 recording sessions between 1967 and 2006.
