Henry Sykes Stephens

Henry Sykes Stephens KH (* 1795 or * 1796 ; † July 6, 1878 in London ) was an English officer , painter and musician .

Life

Henry Sykes Stephens was promoted to Ensign in June 1815 , Lieutenant in November of that year, and Captain in 1825 . Until the end of 1840 he was an active officer for 10 years and paid half pay for over 16 years .

At present, the personal union between Britain and Hanover Stephens served as adjutant of the Viceroy Adolph Friedrich , the Duke of Cambridge in the royal capital of the Kingdom of Hanover stationed. The Hannoversche address book created in 1836 for the year 1837 recorded “Stephens, HS, Capitain, Oberadjutant Sr. Königl. Highness of the Vice-King Duke of Cambridge "with residence at the address at the time" Georgstrasse 354 f. "

Hanover's personal union with Great Britain ended in 1837 with the death of King Wilhelm IV. Before King Ernst August of Hanover took office , the Duke of Cambridge was adopted as Hanoverian viceroy. His aide-de-camp Henry Sykes Stephens was awarded a Knight of the Guelph Order in the same year .

After some time with half pay, Captain Stephens took over the 86th regiment on foot in Great Britain on February 1, 1839. At the same time he was retroactive to June 28, 1838 for certification - Major transported. He gave up the regiment in October 1841. When a daughter of the Duke of Cambridge married the later Grand Duke Friedrich Wilhelm II of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in the chapel of Buckingham Palace in 1843 , Henry Sykes Stephens was his "Man of Honor".

Stephens was made Sergeant at Arms in the Royal Household of Queen Victoria in 1847 and one of the Gentleman Usher Quarterly Waiter in 1852 . In 1854, Stephens was promoted to colonel , still on half pay. In September 1865 he moved up to the rank of major-general in the course of his seniority in the British Army . In 1877 he was described as a Lieutenant-General . He died in London on July 6, 1878, at the age of 82.

Stephens' wife gave birth to a son on November 21, 1835 in Hanover. Henry Sykes Stephens also had at least one daughter. Mary Henrietta married Charles William Williams-Bulkeley, the son of a baronet , in 1871 . She died in June 1878, apparently childless.

As an artist, Stephens remained relatively unknown. He dabbled in the fields of visual arts and music and during his time in Hanover apparently had contact with the transport politician, manufacturer and art collector Bernhard Hausmann .

  • the Municipal Archives Hannover had received early 1930s, a watercolor of HS Stephens, on the facade of the historic building Schmiedestraße 30 had been held in Hanover.
