Herbert Berg (born July 9, 1910 in Altena , † October 20, 1938 in Düsseldorf ) was a German automobile racing driver .

Career

Berg was one of the most active German private drivers of the late 1930s and was considered a mountain racing specialist . He started in Mercedes-Benz , Alfa Romeo , BMW and Maserati cars, which were used by himself or by the Süddeutsche Renngemeinschaft or Ecurie Helvetia , and competed in both the Voiturette and Grand Prix categories.

Herbert Berg won 1935 Mercedes-Benz SSK the race of sports cars over 2000 cc engine capacity in Feldberg race in the Taunus . In the following year he repeated this success on Alfa Romeo in the sports cars with supercharged over 2000 cc. In the same year he also won a hill climb on the Hohensyburg near Dortmund .

On August 5, 1937, Berg bought a Maserati 6CM . 1938 he made his only Grand Prix as part of the AIACR advertised Grand Prix Championship . At the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring , Berg started on a Maserati 6CM of Ecurie Helvetia and retired shortly after the start due to a defect in the fuel pump . This year he finished fourth and second in the Voiturette races for the Grand Prix of Albi and La Baule with the 6CM . At the beginning of October 1938, Berg contested his last race on the fast Brooklands Railway in England .

Herbert Berg died on October 20, 1938 in Düsseldorf at the age of 28 as a result of an accident . As a pedestrian on a street, he fell so badly that the back of his head hit a curb . Shortly after being admitted to the hospital, he succumbed to the severe concussion he suffered. His funeral took place in Altena on October 23, 1938.
