Herbert Grubinger

Herbert Grubinger (born September 11, 1922 in Vienna ; † June 16, 2018 in Carinthia ) was an Austrian cultural and hydraulic engineer . From 1961 to 1988 he was associate professor of agricultural engineering , especially for technical culture hydraulic engineering at the ETH Zurich .

Life

Herbert Grubinger grew up in Vienna- Hernals , where he also attended schools and graduated from high school . In 1941 he began studying cultural engineering at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna . Interrupted by military service in World War II , he graduated with a diploma in 1947. After several years of practical engineering activity, he returned to BOKU in 1950 and received his doctorate in soil culture in 1951 (Dr. rer. Nat. Techn.). He then studied at the Vienna University of Geology and a PhD here for Dr. phil. In 1955 he completed his habilitation at BOKU, which made his appointment as a lecturer possible. In 1961 he was appointed full professor of cultural engineering at the ETH Zurich as successor to Ernst Tanner, where he remained until his retirement in 1988. In addition, he read at BOKU on selected chapters of cultural technology in tropical and subtropical zones until 1992.

He was Vice President of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) based in New Delhi , co-editor of the magazine for cultural technology and land consolidation, founding member of the international research association Interprävent and the Swiss Society of Engineers and Biology , as well as a delegate of the state governments of the cantons of Valais and Aargau for the water management of Aletsch and the Reuss Valley - melioration as well as one of the official technical experts of the highest water authority in Austria. For his work on the preservation of the Danube as a free stretch of river in the Wachau in Lower Austria and on the water management of the irrigation of the Lower Austrian Marchfeld he was awarded by the Austrian federal government.

Herbert Grubinger lived in Vienna, Zurich and Köstenberg in Velden am Wörther See and died in June 2018 at the age of 95.
