Herbert Kraus (born January 19, 1937 in Vienna ; † February 22, 2018 in Graz ) was an Austrian economist and professor of business administration at the University of Graz for many years .

life and career

Herbert Kraus was born on January 19, 1937 in Vienna and began studying here in 1956 at what was then the University of World Trade , where he graduated in 1959 with a degree in business administration . Subsequently doctorate he 1961 Dr. rer. comm. before completing his habilitation in business administration in Vienna in 1966 . Two years later he was appointed full professor for business administration at the University of Graz and worked as such until his retirement in 2005. From 1973 to 1974 he also worked as dean of the law and political science faculty at the University of Graz. Parallel to his university career, Kraus held various other functions in public life. Between 1975 and 1995 he was co-founder and head of the administrative academies in Styria , Tyrol and Salzburg . Furthermore, in 1979 he was co-founder and ten-year host - including three years as chairman - of the Scientific Commission for Public Enterprises and Administrations in the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration .

During his tenure, the scientific basis for the performance of management functions in public institutions was created. In addition, groundbreaking work for the reform of public accounting was written, on which the budget reforms in Austria, Germany and Switzerland that came into effect after 2000 were based. Kraus also belonged to various companies and companies as chairman or advisory board. From 1980 he was a member of the advisory board of the Schmalenbach Society for Business Administration and from 1990 chairman of the economic advisory board in the Federal Ministry for National Defense . In 1999 he took over the management of the Austrian Notes User Group , or ANUG for short , and from 2003 worked as a lecturer at the Administrative Academy of the City of Vienna. Kraus played a decisive role in founding the Institute for Organization and Business Data Processing in the early 1970s. As photos from the early 1970s show, he carried out the business simulation TOPIC with executives from Steiermärkische Sparkasse in the Puch-Werke accounting center in Graz . Even before the fall of the Iron Curtain , Kraus had established very close contacts with universities in the Soviet Union in the 1980s and made extensive exchange programs possible. Between 1991 and 1992 he received from these contacts and his work from the Large-University Peter-St Petersburg Polytechnic and the National Polytechnic Research University Perm each one honorary doctorates awarded. In the early 1990s, among other things, he developed the so-called Electronic Meeting Room , based on the electronic meeting system .

During his decades of work at the University of Graz, he obtained his doctorate and habilitation from numerous scientists. In addition to the aforementioned Reinbert Schauer (1978), he also obtained his habilitation from Norbert Kailer (1988), Otto Petrovic (1993), Otto Krickl (1995) and Josef Scheff . In addition, Kraus was the author and editor of numerous books and contributed articles to magazines. He also gave innumerable seminars and was present at numerous symposia . Kraus was regarded as a highly valued consultant and lecturer. Throughout his life he received various honors and awards. In 1967 he was awarded the Cardinal Innitzer Prize . Shortly after his two honorary doctorates, Kraus was awarded the Great Decoration of Honor in 1993 for his services to the State of Styria . In 1998 the big golden Schulze-Delitzsch-Medal of the Austrian Cooperative Association was awarded ; In 2003 Kraus received the Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st Class .

On February 22, 2018 Kraus died age of 81 in Graz and was in Graz on March 9, 2018 cremated .
