Herbert Leuninger

Herbert Leuninger (born September 8, 1932 in Cologne - Ossendorf ; † July 28, 2020 in Limburg an der Lahn ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and human rights activist .

Life

Herbert Leuninger was the middle of three children from Alois and Elisabeth Leuninger from Mengerskirchen in the Westerwald ; his brother Ernst Leuninger was also a Catholic priest and theologian. His uncle Franz Leuninger was a Christian trade unionist and resistance fighter against the Nazi regime, who was hanged on March 1, 1945 in Berlin-Plötzensee prison .

Leuninger studied after graduating from the school Weilburg philosophy and theology and received on 8 December 1958 at the cathedral of Limburg , the ordination . After his pastoral internship in Frankfurt-Nied , he worked from 1959 to 1970 as a chaplain in Oberlahnstein , at the Antoniuskirche in Frankfurt am Main and as a pastor in Kriftel . In 1970 he became a youth pastor in the Main-Taunus district. From 1972 to 1992 Leuninger was migration advisor to the Bishop of Limburg. He was a European advisor and board member of the European Refugee Council based in London .

In 1986 in Frankfurt am Main, together with Jürgen Micksch and others, he was one of the co-founders of the human rights organization for refugees Pro Asyl , whose spokesman he was until 1994 and European speaker from 1994 to 1998.

Leuninger has published numerous publications, in particular on church and theology , integration , xenophobia , multicultural society, and asylum law in Germany and Europe.
