Herbert Otto

Herbert Otto (born March 15, 1925 in Breslau ; † August 24, 2003 in Ahrenshoop ) was a German writer .

Life

Herbert Otto was the son of a worker and a seamstress . After attending primary school , he completed a commercial apprenticeship in Wroclaw and then worked as an employee at a bank . In 1943 he became a member of the NSDAP . From 1943 to 1944 he took part in the Second World War as a member of the Wehrmacht . He got into Romanian , then Soviet captivity , from which he was released in 1948. After attending the Antifa Central School in Moscow , he returned to Germany in 1949 . In the GDR he worked as a functionary of the Society for German-Soviet Friendship , as a dramaturge and as a lecturer in the publishing house Kultur und progress . He then lived as a freelance writer in Kleinmachnow , and later in Potsdam .

Herbert Otto was the author of novels , travelogues and essays . His debut The Lie is the strongly autobiographical story of the transformation of a Wehrmacht soldier during his captivity in the Soviet Union. Otto's later works mostly deal with everyday life in the GDR: The novel The Time of the Storks describes the problems and conflicts of young workers; For example Josef is the story of the integration of an adventurer and ex-Foreign Legionnaire into GDR society; The dream of the elk is an erotic social novel .

Herbert Otto was a member of the GDR Writers' Association . Within this organization he was chairman of the Potsdam district association and a member of the board of the general association. From 1987 he belonged to the PEN Center of the GDR , later to the East German and finally to the PEN Center Germany .
