Time of the Storks is a DEFA film by director Siegfried Kühn from 1971.

content

On a trip to a friend with whom she would like to spend her vacation, the teacher Susanne Krug meets the assembly worker Christian Smolny. Susanne is principled, a candidate of the SED and has been with the rock solid Wolfgang for two years. They do not live an exciting, but harmonious life and are about to get married. Christian leads a relaxed life, apart from his work he hardly takes anything seriously. Susanne is the first woman to whom he feels something like love. Susanne also falls in love with Christian, but cannot cope with his attitude towards life, which he does not want to change. There is a big argument between the two of them and Susanne returns to Wolfgang. But she realizes that she only loves Christian. She arranges a reunion with Christian. Both speak out and Christian wants to change in the future.

criticism

  • A utility film in the good sense, made with a few ambitions, but more a job that you do solidly than a matter of the heart. (Rolf Richter in DEFA Feature Film Directors and Their Critics , 1981)
  • The film, which is cheerful in its basic tenor, poetically conveys the basics of our [...] attitude to life. The construction site, as well as the Mecklenburg landscape with the village, the meadows, ponds and the flying storks - which have become a symbol here - are organically integrated into the plot and the image design. Siegfried Kühn thus proves his talent for directing. (Manfred Jelenski in Morgen , July 25, 1971)

Remarks

The color film "Roter Kreis" , shot in 1970 by DEFA Group KAG , premiered on September 3, 1971 in the Leipzig cinema "Capitol". Director Siegfried Kühn filmed the story Time of the Storks by Herbert Otto from 1966 in the tradition of contemporary Soviet films of that time. The graduate of the Moscow Film School Gerasimow Institute for Cinematography told the story against the background of the "scientific-technical revolution" in the GDR.

Shortly afterwards, Heidemarie Wenzel and Winfried Glatzeder played together again in the DEFA classic Die Legende von Paul und Paula . For tall, slim and blonde Heidemarie Wenzel, the successful film was her breakthrough to star, not least because of one of the first nude scenes in a DEFA film. The theater director Fritz Marquardt plays a small supporting role as a railway attendant in the film.
