The Herfabach is an 11.3 km long orographically left tributary of the Werra at the northern interface of the Rhön ( Soisberger Kuppenrhön ) to the Fulda-Werra-Bergland ( Seulingswald ) in the East Hessian district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg ( "Waldhessen" ).
It rises on the eastern outskirts of Friedewald at an altitude of about 376 m and flows through the southeastern Seulingswald along state road 3255 in an easterly direction, where it passes through Herfa in the center and finally reaches the Werra valley near Wölfershausen via the Herfagrund , to flow at a height of 216 m. This corresponds to an average bed slope of 14 ‰.
Catchment area and tributaries
The 40 km large catchment area of Herfabachs ranges northwest directly up to the Fulda - Werra -Wasserscheide that here the A 4 between the terminals Friedewald and Hönebach follows. Due to the location on the leeward side of the Rhön and Seulingswald, the mean discharge (MQ) is comparatively low compared to the catchment area at 245 l / s.
Immediately to the east of Friedewald, the Quellbach is fed on the left by several streams from the north. At Herfa, the 6.6 km² sub- catchment area Langer Grund (GKZ 41522) flows from the left , in which, however, no noteworthy stream runs.
Only shortly before the mouth and immediately after leaving the Seulingswald flows into Wölfershausen with the Eitzeröder Wasser (GKZ 41524; 3.9 km, 11.3 km²), the only really noteworthy tributary from the left.
