Heringhausen is a village ("gateway to Valmetal") and part of the municipality of Bestwig ( Hochsauerlandkreis ). On June 30, 2012 Heringhausen had 811 inhabitants.

The place is at an average altitude of 380 m. The area of ​​the Heringhauser district is 6.15 km². The built-up area of ​​this includes 0.3 km², plus 0.2 km² of streets, paths and squares. About 4 km² are forest.

The place is known for its very large Christmas tree protections, the products of which are sold throughout Germany and abroad. Below the village is a small Valme reservoir .

history

The place was probably created in the 9th or 10th century. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1314 in a property register of the Meschede Monastery . An iron hammer powered by water power existed even before the Thirty Years War . Heringhausen belonged in the Prussian period after 1816 to the mayor's office of Eversberg , from 1841 or to the tax municipality of Heringhausen founded in 1826, Halbeswig , Grimlinghausen (today Nierbachtal ) and the miners' colonies Ziegelwiese, Dörnberg and Andreasberg, founded in 1854, also originally belonged .

In 1858 the place belonged to the municipality of Velmede . Around 1865 it was spun off from Velmede and became an independent municipality. Because of the mining character, the last three places were reclassified to Ramsbeck on April 1, 1910 . Heringhausen has been part of the municipality of Bestwig since the municipal reorganization, which came into force on January 1, 1975.

In Heringhausen there are 14 associations that take care of shaping cultural life. The largest association is the Schützenbruderschaft St. Jakobus 1873 eV Heringhausen with approx. 430 members. The Schützenfest is celebrated annually in Heringhausen on the weekend of Pentecost. On the first weekend in September 2017, the Heringhauser Schützen hosted the 24th Kreisschützenfest of the Kreisschützenbund Meschede eV. On the same weekend in 2018 the community rifle festival Bestwig took place in Heringhausen. The youngest association was founded in 2011 under the name "Dorfgemeinschaft Heringhausen eV". It has about 300 members. Under the leadership of the village community, the 700th anniversary of the village was celebrated with a festival weekend in 2014. In 2013 a replica of the Heringhauser iron hammer was inaugurated in the center of the village, which was created by the village community. With the support of LEADER 4 Mitten im Sauerland, the village community is currently redesigning the rest and mining playground behind the shooting range. The story of the "little train", the former narrow-gauge railway for transporting ore from the Ramsbeck mine to the Bestwig train station, will also be presented here.

Every year on Carnival Sunday, the carnival parade organized by the Carnival Club Mühls (KCM) takes place in Heringhausen.

Blazon : In silver over a black water wheel, two red-handled black hammers placed in the St. Andrew's cross. Description: Silver and black indicate that it previously belonged to the Electorate of Cologne. The official approval was given on December 29, 1962.

The catholic parish church of St. Nikolaus , which was consecrated in 1965, is well worth seeing .

One of the most beautiful club buildings in the area is the Schützenhalle St. Jakobus on Bestwiger Straße, completed in 1921.

Above the village "on the Borg" there is a shrine of the Virgin from 1975.

In 2013, a replica of the iron hammer once operated in Heringhausen was inaugurated in the center of the village.

Since 2018, the Heringhausen goat breeding association has been home to a herd of goats on a meadow above the village (former "goat pasture") in the summer months.

In 2019/20, the "Am Bähnchen rest and mining playground" was upgraded.
