politics

Arentz joined the CDU in 1971 at the age of 18. Coming from the Catholic labor movement, Arentz put his political focus on the representation of workers' rights : Since 1987 he has chaired the CDU Federal Committee on Social Policy. From 1980 to 2005 he was a board member of the CDU district association in Cologne and in 1991 Arentz was elected to the state board of the CDU North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1993 to June 2001 he was 1st Deputy Federal Chairman of the CDA. As such, he was the executive chairman of the CDU social committees between December 1993 and March 1994, after Werner Schreiber , who had been elected shortly before, announced his resignation. On June 7, 2001, Arentz was elected to succeed Rainer Eppelmann as federal chairman of the CDA. From 1995 to 2002 Arentz was also CDA state chairman in North Rhine-Westphalia. At the federal level, Arentz was in addition to his CDA chairmanship from September 1998 to 2004 a member of the federal board of the CDU. From April 10, 2000 to December 6, 2004 he was a member of the CDU Presidium.

From May 29, 1980 to June 2, 2005, he was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia for five electoral terms. He was elected from the CDU's national list . In the CDU parliamentary group he was the social policy spokesman from 1985 and from 1995 deputy group chairman .

On the election proposal of the CDU parliamentary group in the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia, Arentz took part in the elections for the Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany as a member of the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Federal Assemblies.

Hermann-Josef Arentz was already an employee of the social department of Rheinbraun during his time in the state parliament and as such was released according to the internal guidelines of the company for mandated members in council groups and parliaments with reduced salaries. His work for Rheinbraun was well-known, which is why the leader of the Greens in the state parliament, Roland Appel, repeatedly referred to Arentz as a "Rheinbraun lobbyist" or "on the RWE payroll" when he campaigned for the controversial Garzweiler II lignite project. In December 2004 it was launched that Arentz received an annual salary of 60,000  euros . Therefore, in December 2004, his application for re-election to the CDU presidium failed and on December 8, 2004 he announced his resignation from the federal chairmanship of the CDA. In addition, Arentz decided not to stand for the upcoming state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia on May 22, 2005 . Within the party, Arentz was known to be critical and employee-oriented. a. because of his book, published in 2004, in which he criticized "the growing contradictions between rich and poor, the increasing ecological threats and the financial crises that result from the excessive volatility of capital flows". Arentz was therefore a thorn in the side of parts of the economic wing as a possible social minister in North Rhine-Westphalia after winning an election in 2005. Even after his resignation, Arentz remained active in the CDA in a leading position in the state and federal executive boards and most recently headed the Policy Program Commission, which developed the new policy program adopted by the CDA in November 2015.
