The "voice of the Reinhardswald"

Even after his retirement, Hermann-Josef Rapp, as an intimate connoisseur of the Reinhardswald, remained a sought-after contact person for forest visitors and the media. By 2011, he designed and led around 1,000 guided tours, held numerous lectures, and acted in an advisory capacity and as an interview partner on several television documentaries and film shoots. He is the editor and co-author of the books Reinhardswald - Eine Kulturgeschichte (2002) and - together with Marcus Schmidt - giant trees and bracken. The "Primeval Forest Sababurg" in Reinhardswald (2006). He also worked as an author on the book Beberbeck between Sababurg and Gesundbrunnen. A journey through time through the region (2008) with. In addition, he has published numerous articles in specialist publications and is one of the longstanding authors of the series Jahrbuch Landkreis Kassel and the nature blog natur.reinhardshagen.de . Rapp is involved in the Naturschutzbund Deutschland NABU Altkreis Hofgeismar eV and in the Kassel working group of the Hessian Society for Ornithology and Nature Conservation. V. (HGON) . As a voluntary representative of the Upper Nature Conservation Authority, he looks after five nature reserves , including the internationally known nature reserve Urwald Sababurg , for which he is particularly strong. Rapp is also a sponsor of the Reinhardswald Ecomuseum. He also campaigns for the stork breeding pairs in Reinhardshagen-Vaake, which have become known nationwide since 1998.

In addition, Hermann-Josef Rapp is one of the pioneers of natural burial in Germany. It is largely thanks to his initiative that the first FriedWald in Germany was established in Reinhardswald in 2001, the FriedWald Reinhardswald . Rapp was thus the first "FriedWald forester" nationwide.

Rapp also became known throughout Hesse in the dispute over the Schloss-Beberbeck-Resort planned in Beberbeck . As a vehement opponent of the expansion plans, the forester was involved as a spokesman for the “Beberbeck Action Alliance”, in which the large nature conservation associations also participate. According to the alliance, the holiday resort project, which finally broke down at the end of 2010, is not only too big for the intended location, but above all also means significant interventions in nature and the landscape - not least for the Sababurg primeval forest. Alternatively, Rapp and his colleagues advocate developing the state domain into a “model project for sustainable tourism” and designating a Reinhardswald Nature Park for this purpose .

Union engagement

Rapp is a member of the Horticulture, Agriculture and Forestry Union (GGLF) or its successor organization, Industrial Union of Construction, Agriculture and Environment (IG BAU) , where he has been involved in boards and committees for many years.
