Hermann Emden (photographer)
Hermann Seligmann Emden (* 1815 in Frankfurt am Main ; † 1879 ) was a German , engraver , lithographer and photographer . One of his works is one of the earliest photographically illustrated books in Germany.
Life
Hermann Emden learned, like many other photographers of his time and, first of all the artistic craft of engraving and lithography, before he was working as one of the first photographers in Frankfurt from 1852: The renowned art teacher Clemens Philippart , in Bonn the photograph on paper, Emden entered into a cooperation in the same year and temporarily assisted it.
It is believed that the Emden photographer John Schafgans with the calotype made known.
Also in 1852 Emden worked in Elberfeld with " Paul Eduard Liesegang , whose optical and mechanical equipment later achieved world fame."
Hermann Emden secured a firm place in the history of photography thanks to a folio volume with 36 calotypes , presumably based on collodion negatives , under the title The Cathedral of Mainz and its most important monuments : in a balanced combination of German-French accompanying text and a wealth of large - and small-format illustrations of building details such as portals and tombs, this book is an important forerunner of modern architectural monographs , and one of the earliest photographically illustrated books in Germany.
Hermann Emden ran a studio in Frankfurt am Main until 1872 .
Emden was apparently planning to expand in Württemberg and opened two branches in 1864: one in Tübingen and one in Gmünd . He was unsuccessful and gave it up the following year. No signed photographs from his work in Tübingen and Gmünd could be found.
