Hermann Schröder (architect)

Hermann Richard Schröder (born August 5, 1928 in Hamburg ; † March 21, 2016 in Berg ) was a German architect and university professor.

Life

The son of Helene and Hermann Carl Schröder grew up on Loogeplatz in Hamburg-Eppendorf . In the Second World War he was deployed as a flak helper from 1944 and in labor service from 1945. He escaped capture at the end of the war and reached his parents' house on May 2, 1945. After graduating from high school in 1948, he did an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, which he completed in 1950 with the journeyman's examination. In the same year he began studying architecture at the Technical University of Stuttgart , which he graduated with honors in 1955.

From 1955 to 1957 Schröder was Hans Volkart's assistant at the TH Stuttgart, after which he worked in the Baden-Württemberg building administration until 1961 . In 1961 he passed the second state examination for master builder. From 1961 to 1962 he was visiting professor at the Kingston School of Art in England. Between 1962 and 1965 he worked as assistant to Günther Wilhelm at the TH Stuttgart.

In 1965 Hermann Schröder founded an architecture office together with Peter Faller . From 1973 to 1974 he was a visiting professor at the ETH Zurich . In 1975 he was appointed to the Technical University of Munich. At the same time, he realized housing projects in Bavaria with Sampo Widmann . From 1975 to 1996 he was professor at the Technical University of Munich and from 1988 to 1990 Dean of the Technical University of Munich.

Schröder died on March 21, 2016 after a short illness with his family.
