Hermann Stell (born December 31, 1944 in Papenburg ; † May 4, 2004 ) was a German politician ( CDU ). From 1999 to 2004 he was Lord Mayor of Flensburg .

Life

Hermann Stell initially worked as a business economist for the city of Cologne and in Delmenhorst in Lower Saxony . In 1993 he took over the office of mayor and at the same time treasurer of the city of Flensburg (see also: List of the city leaders of Flensburg ). During this time he developed the conversion idea, which in 1997 had the Bundeswehr evacuated from the Briesen barracks in the Weiche district, redesigned into a garden city . The end of the Cold War led to the dismantling of the Bundeswehr, especially in Flensburg, which resulted in economic losses that had to be compensated.

In early July 1999 he won the runoff election for mayor against SPD applicant Klaus Kotte. In February 2001 it became known that the Bundeswehr technical school in Flensburg-Mürwik was to be closed. Hermann Stell spoke out emphatically against the closure. The conversion problems should keep local politics busy. In the third year of Hermann Stell's tenure, the successful transformation of the naval port of the base in Mürwik , which was abandoned in 1998 and is now known as Marina Sonwik , began. The building complex of the news school , which served as the headquarters of the telecommunications school until 2002 , was also moved into in 2003 by the new school for strategic reconnaissance of the Bundeswehr . The abandoned building of the Bundeswehr technical school was also converted into a staff platoon for the Mürwik naval school.

On November 10, 2001, he opened the Natural Science Museum on the Museumsberg Flensburg . A year later, on August 2, 2002, Hermann Stell opened the foam magazine of today's Ice Age House in Christiansenpark , which is part of the Museumberg. In autumn 2001, Hermann Stell presented plans to the public to build a large shopping center called “Südermarktpassage”, which was to be built on Angelburger Strasse and Südermarkt . A number of buildings were to be demolished for the project, including the building of the Flensburg City Library . Initially, the Steinbach House , where the connection to the Holm was to be implemented, was also at risk. The passage project, in particular the relocation of the city library to the top floor of the passage, was very controversial. Hermann Stell died after a stroke in 2004 during his tenure as Lord Mayor of the City of Flensburg. On November 2nd, 2006, the Südermarktpassage was officially opened under the name Flensburg Galerie. A memorial plaque to Hermann Stell, who campaigned for the construction of the passage, was placed on the preserved Steinbach House. The garden city project was completed in May 2015.
