Hermann Johann Freiherr von Camphausen ( Russian Герман фон Кампенгаузен ; born April 28 . Jul / 9. May  1773 greg. In Lenzenhof , † September 15 jul. / 27. September  1836 greg. In Orellen ) was a Livonian state politicians.

Life

family

Hermann was a member of the Baltic noble family von Campenhausen . His parents were the Russian civil governor in Livonia Balthasar Freiherr von Campenhausen (1745–1800) and Sophie Eleonore, nee. Woldeck von Arneburg (1744–1791). The Russian court lady Sophie von Campenhausen (1776–1835) and the likewise Russian statesman Balthasar von Campenhausen (1772–1823) were siblings of his.

In 1807 he married Countess Dorothea von Keyserlingk (1779–1847).

Career

Hermann received his upbringing and schooling from 1779 to 1792 in the Moravian Institute in Niesky and Barby . He then studied law , philosophy and mathematics at the University of Halle until 1795 .

After completion of training, he joined Saxony-gothasche services, was initially in the Life Guards on horseback, had since 1798 Counselor and 1800-1803 Komitialgesandter in Regensburg and finally in 1802 Chamberlain and Major .

From 1803 Campenhausen resided permanently in Livonia, where he had owned the Orellen, Kudum, Lenzenhof and Dubinsky estates from 1801 . In 1804 he was chivalrous treasurer and from 1805 to 1824 district deputy of the Rigische Kreis. In 1811 he became President of the Wolmarschen Schutzblattern Committee and in 1815 President of the Soul Revision Commission in Wenden . Furthermore, he was assistant to the consistory in 1815, from 1824 to 1836 Livonian district administrator and head of the church, and from 1825 to 1829 court judge. He was a member of the commission for the drafting of the church law for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Russian Empire in St. Petersburg . Campenhausen was elected President of the Livonian Consistory by the Landtag in 1833, but his election was not confirmed. The Society for the History and Archeology of the Baltic Sea Provinces of Russia was president from 1834-1836 and from 1835 he was also director of the Rigian section of the Evangelical Bible Society in Russia.

Campenhausen maintained close ties to the Brethren congregation throughout his life and was a promoter of rural elementary schools.
