Hermann von Gaertner

Hermann August Gottlieb von Gaertner (born November 25, 1818 in Neuwied , † March 12, 1886 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian major general and inspector of the 4th engineer inspection.

Life

origin

Hermann was a son of Carl von Gaertner (1794-1840) and his wife Luise, née Winz (1796-1848). His father was a district administrator for the Ahrweiler district and a Prussian captain in the Landwehr . His brother Franz (1817–1872) also became district administrator, his brother Johann Otto (1829–1894) a Prussian lieutenant general .

Military career

After attending the grammar schools in Trier and Kreuznach , Gaertner joined the 8th Pioneer Department of the Prussian Army as a one-year volunteer . For further training, he completed the United Artillery and Engineering School for two years from October 1837 . On November 4, 1840 he was aggregated as Second Lieutenant of the 3rd Engineer Inspection and on October 1, 1841, he was assigned to the 8th Engineer Department. On June 27, 1846, he was assigned to the engineer inspection and on April 15, 1845, he was sent to Minden for fortification services. On April 20, 1847 he was first adjutant of the 8th Pioneer Department and on May 1, 1849 adjutant of the 5th fortress inspection. From there he came to the 5th Engineer Department on November 11, 1850, where he rose to Prime Lieutenant on December 7, 1850 . He went to the 6th Pioneer Division on March 31, 1851. There he was appointed leader of the 1st Reserve Engineer Company on May 29, 1851. Promoted to captain on May 31, 1853, he came to Wesel for fortification services on October 26, 1853. On February 25, 1854 he became 1st Adjutant of the Inspection and on July 21, 1861 commander of the 2nd Reserve Engineer Company. He rose to major on June 2, 1863, was sent to Mainz for fortification services , and was appointed director of genius on September 21, 1865.

During the mobilization for the German war he was relieved of this position on June 15, 1866 and assigned to lead the fortification security measures in the area around Berlin. He returned to his peace position on August 24, 1866. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on December 31, 1866, with a patent from October 30, 1866. On February 6, 1868, he became chief of staff at the General Inspectorate of the Engineer Corps . There he was promoted to colonel on July 26, 1870 and major general on May 2, 1874. On December 12, 1874 he was appointed inspector of the 4th Engineer Inspection. On 18 January 1877 he was awarded the Red Eagle Award II. Class, and on May 15, 1877. The board for disposition made. He died unmarried on March 12, 1886 in Wiesbaden.

Gaertner was an honorary member of the Association for Research into Rhenish History and had made a contribution to securing Roman artifacts.
