Hermann von Schwerin (Bishop)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann von Schwerin (* 1155 ; † February 7, 1228 at the earliest , 1230 at the latest in Hamburg ) was provost of the cathedral in Hamburg in 1186 , counter-bishop in the diocese of Schwerin from 1191 to 1195 and then again provost of the cathedral in Hamburg.

Life

Count Hermann was the eldest son of Gunzelin I and had been known as Provost of Hamburg since 1185. After the death of Bishop Berno in 1191, part of the cathedral chapter elected the son Hermann of the first Schwerin settlement count, the noble Gunzelin I of Hagen, as the new bishop. As a German candidate , he probably owed the election to the influence of his family. At that time the cathedral chapter was evidently not very familiar with canon law in bishops' elections. On October 24, 1191 he received from Pope Celestine III. a certificate of confirmation, but it only concerned the offices of dean, provost and the admission of canons. There was no question of a bishopric .

There was no confirmation of the elect . In documents of Archbishop Hartwig II of Bremen , who was also responsible for the suffragan diocese of Schwerin, Provost Hermann appeared as such on July 3, 1194, adding his title Zwerinensis electus , or omitting the prepositus , as on August 13, 1194.

There was certainly no question of a papal confirmation. The Pope Celestine III. In the dispute between the Schwerin Cathedral Chapter and the Wende because of the election of the opposing Bishop Hermann, an arbitration tribunal was established that met on August 18, 1185 in Boizenburg . Under the chairmanship of the Premonstratensian Bishop Isfried von Ratzeburg , the Abbot Arnold zu St. Johann in Lübeck and the Lübeck Canon Hermann took part. The most important decisions were: The privileges of the Schwerin Church should not be affected by the bishop, the free choice of the bishop, dean and canon should remain and the bishop may not sell any property. Should a war arise between the Germans and the Wende, the bishop and the canons receive protection from the Wende.

Count Hermann complied with the verdict, renounced his episcopal dignity and no longer carried his title Electus . As a former opponent of Bishop Brunward , he appears on March 31, 1222, in which the veneration of the Holy Blood in Schwerin was regulated, as a witness to a remarkable document. After the bishop himself, the name of the abbot Mattheus of Doberan follows on the document and then Hermann as provost of Hamburg and as the last of the foreign clerics Friedrich , canon of Hildesheim . Canon Friedrich as Count of Schwerin , was the brother of the former elect Hermann, who was to become Brunwards' successor himself as Bishop of Schwerin.

Count Hermann died on February 7th, 1230 and was buried in the old monastery of Buxtehude . Hildesheim Cathedral Provost Friedrich and Count Gunzelin von Schwerin donated a memorial to the monastery in Buxtehude for him and Count Heinrich, leaving certain goods.
